International trademark watching with WIPO
International watching is not one worldwide search. The Madrid System, Global Brand Database and national or regional registers cover different collections; a reliable strategy states what it checks and what remains outside.
Choose the source for the right
The Madrid System's find-and-monitor environment provides international registration, designation, status and history information. The Global Brand Database combines international collections and data from participating offices.
WIPO itself notes that its global database does not necessarily replace direct checks of national or regional registers. Map every territory of interest to a source and review owner.
Separate international registration and territorial effect
An international registration may have several designations with different statuses. Watching should retain the international number while also recording the territory, status and event for each designation.
Do not turn a global change into the same conclusion for every country. Validate the data and applicable procedure wherever action may be required.
Normalise without erasing differences
Normalise identifiers, dates, owners, classes and goods or services to order review, but preserve official wording and links. Statuses and events from different offices are not always equivalent.
Record languages, scripts and applied transliterations. Phonetic and semantic variants should fit watched markets to avoid both gaps and indiscriminate expansion.
Operate verifiable coverage
Maintain a matrix of territory, source, right type, frequency, known latency and latest successful ingestion. Gaps should appear as incidents, not as no-hit results.
Assign alerts by jurisdiction and control deadlines with validated local rules. Review the matrix whenever sources, portfolio, priority countries or official tools change.
